SERVICE CHILDREN’S EDUCATION (SCE)

Service Children’s Education (SCE) is an Agency of the MOD and is dedicated to
the education of the children of Service families and MOD personnel serving outside of the United Kingdom. We seek to provide a first class system of schools and educational support services and our aim is to provide an effective and efficient education service, from Foundation Stage through to sixth form, and to enable children to benefit from their residence abroad.

Our schools follow the National Curriculum (England), administer national assessments and public examinations, and are inspected by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate (HMI). Teachers in SCE schools must have recognised UK professional qualifications and the majority are recruited specially from the United Kingdom for service in our schools.

SCE operates 43 schools: 35 primary, 6 secondary and 2 middle schools, which are attended by approximately 10,100 children in total. There are also 41 Foundation Stage (FS1) settings (previously known as Preschools), which are managed by primary schools and are attended by approximately 1,800 children. Service schools are located within the following countries: Belgium, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Falkland Islands, Belize and Brunei.

The headquarters of SCE is based at the Wegberg Military Complex in Germany and the Agency is managed by an Executive Board consisting of the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Education and the Director of Support Services. Supporting the Director of Education are the Assistant Directors for Pupil and Family Services, Teaching and Learning and Standards and Assessment.
